Traditionally built into the corners of the building, Quoin stones provide detail to the building and are often made in colour so that the brickwork can be complimented. Additionally, quoin stones provide strength to the building and protect it from all kinds of weather.
Quoins are generally built into the wall as part of the structure. They can be adjusted with any size of brick or block work and also as per any ‘leg’ length dimensions required.
There are 4 different types of Quoin or Quoin Stones:
This is the standard type which is built into the wall corner one long side over one short side. Return Quoins are usually made to fit with brick sizes which have the following dimensions: 440mm long leg*215mm short leg*215mm high*102mm thick.
It is built into the wall as a standard block. Reveal Quoin is usually used for door and window reveals. They are also made to fit with brick sizes and are generally supplied with two sizes so that the effect of return quoin can be replicated.
There is a chamfer on the top, at the bottom and the outside edges of this quoin for aesthetic reasons. The chamfer can be on reveal, return or cladding type quoins.
These quoins are 50mm thick and fixed to the fall after the corner is finished. If you wish to render the walls, then fix the quoins before rendering and bring the render upto the chamfer. They are easy to handle and simple to fix using a two-part resin.
